Below is an email from Roger McDougal. He contacted me last Fall because he was looking for a bike after he crashed his skinny tire bike and was injured. He found my bikes somehow and so he called me. We talked about the ride he was wanting to do and a bike for it. He is 72 years old. I built him a bike and shipped it out to him in December.

He emailed me to let me know how things were going, share his bike blog/journal (and to tell me he is liking his Jones). He’s certainly having an adventure.

Hi Jeff and Sheila

I have done 5 days and crossed the first hurdle, the Cascades. The bike is wonderful. I am very happy with it. I have descended some huge hills without touching the brakes, this is how confident I am with the bike.

It handles very well. The big tyres make for a much more comfortable ride. A major benefit over a road bike is that I can pull over into the shoulder when I am threatened by trucks, regardless how bad the shoulder is. This is one major advantage I never anticipated. As you said, I feel no extra rolling resistance. The only negative of the big tyres is working the steering at very low speeds is more difficult but this is a small price to pay. This may be problem unique to me. Because of my age I am very slow on the big ascents.

The gears work well and the disk brakes give me extra confidence on the descents. I managed to get the fenders fitted and used my existing rack. I like the handle bars. Plenty of space for my GPS units, front light etc. It also provides multiple grip positions. I am taking my Jones into a bike store tomorrow to have it checked it out. I know the shop and have confidence in them.

All in all you have built a winner here.

Regards
Roger
